Explosion at Moscow Station Claims Officer’s Life, Suspect Also Dead
According to the ministry, the incident unfolded at approximately 00:05 Moscow time (21:05 GMT), when a man approached traffic officers stationed inside a patrol vehicle on duty at the square before the device detonated. The circumstances surrounding the nature of the explosive remain unclear.
The suspect did not survive the blast, dying at the scene, a news agency reported, citing the city's police press service.
Authorities have moved swiftly to launch a formal investigation. The Russian Investigative Committee announced it has opened a criminal case, deploying investigators and forensic specialists to the site alongside operational units. Teams are currently examining the scene and combing through surveillance footage from the area.
The Committee added that a series of forensic analyses — including medical and explosive-technical examinations — are set to be commissioned in the coming days as investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast as of Tuesday morning.
