Authorities identify missing Russian swimmer found dead in Istanbul

(MENAFN) Authorities confirmed on Wednesday that a body discovered in the waters of Istanbul’s Besiktas district belongs to Russian swimmer Nikolai Andreevich Svechnikov, who went missing on August 24, 2025, during the Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race.

The remains were found along the Kurucesme shoreline and transported to the Forensic Medicine Institute for examination. DNA samples collected from Svechnikov’s parents, who had traveled from Russia to Istanbul, were used to verify the identity of the swimmer. Police escorted the parents from Istanbul Airport to the institute to provide the samples.

Officials stated that, once formal procedures at the institute are completed, Svechnikov’s body will be released to his family.
